Literacy Summer Program
Basic Reading and Comprehension for grades 10-12
Service Description
Overall Course Objective: through a study of Greek Mythology, to instill in students a confident ability to both read and write (with particular emphasis on reading), where students can engage these skills in any setting, be it the classroom, the library, the coffee shop, or any other location these essential skills would be called upon. To complete this objective, the following tools will be made use of: 1. Pronunciation; 2. Vocabulary building; 3. Dictionary practice; 4. Short stories weekly, articles (both written and online), and ingredients reading; 5. Novel reading; and 6. Grammar and writing practice. Materials required: 1. Lined notebook; and 2. Pencils and or pens. Chris will provide the reading content, handouts, and cue cards (for vocabulary and pronunciation practice). Week One: -Pronunciation -Dictionary -Vocabulary (single syllable), and vocabulary building strategies -Basic grammar: the parts of speech Week Two: -Pronunciation -Dictionary -Vocabulary (double syllables), and word stress -Short story reading -Grammar: symbols, and their use Week Three -Pronunciation strategies going forward -Dictionary -Vocabulary (three syllables or more), and primary and secondary stress in a word -Short story reading -Novel reading -Grammar: comma placement Week Four -Dictionary -Vocabulary (phrasal verbs) -Short story reading -Novel reading -Grammar: putting it all together: sentence and paragraph construction Week Five -Dictionary -Vocabulary (blending words) -Short story reading -Novel reading -Introduction to the newspaper article (both written, and online) Week Six -Dictionary -Vocabulary (clipping words) -Short story reading -Novel reading -Short article reading (both written, and online) Week Seven -Dictionary -Vocabulary (idioms, sland, and loan words) -Short story reading -Novel reading completion, and comprehension -Working with longer articles (both written, and online) -Cooking up a storm: how to read a list of ingredients -Overall literacy strategies going forward
