About Elmwood Community School

Thank you for checking out our unique schooling alternative!
Our community was birthed in 2023 out of a growing need for more options in education for students grades 7-12. There are many online options, but there is a distinct lack of face to face socialization which is paramount for pre-teens and teens. There are private options as well. However, most of these are either priced out of reach for most families or they come with a religious or philosophical undercurrent that not all families are comfortable with.
In answer to this need, a small group of passionate educators and parents have come together to do something different.

In an increasingly confusing and divisive society, with ever growing class sizes in the public system there is an unrealistic expectation placed on teachers. Students who just need a bit of extra time, or attention to succeed and enjoy their time at school are falling through the cracks at an alarming rate. Covid 19 came and with it came a massive deficit in education of our children. Along with a lot of socially stunted and newly socially anxious teens who are drowning in an online world of faceless interactions. Elmwood exist to bring a renewal of sorts to our kids. A long pause and a deep breath. A helping, caring, and patient hand up to help our teens not only catch up to and exceed provincial standards in the core classes, but also awaken an interest and passion in hands on life skills. Getting out into nature. And building real life lasting relationships in a community that truly cares for them as an individual.
If you have a student (or you are a student) who has found public school to be a challenge for any reason, I encourage you to read on and see if what we are offering feels like a fit for you. I look forward to speaking with you further about your future at Elmwood Community School.

A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER
MISSION
Elmwood Community School is a robust tutoring program, we offer a unique alternative in education of students grade 5 through to grade 12 in a small, team oriented community setting with highly qualified tutors. Class sizes will never exceed 10 students to ensure every student has a firm grasp on all core subjects in their own individual learning style. As well as offering important life skills such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, job interviews resume writing, and many other hands on opportunities in the trades when possible.
VISION
Our Tutors, Admin, and Parents are committed to building a community that supports students in an individual exploration of who they are and what interests them. Guiding them onto a fulfilling and sure footed path toward their future.
We recognise that some will need post secondary, some will need apprenticeships, some will need help starting a business, and some will need help writing a resume to enter the workforce straight away. No matter what path each student picks we are committed to supporting them to reach their individual goals.
VALUES
At Elmwood, we believe in the importance of an agenda free environment. Our community is an apolitical, neutral environment. Our tutors do not teach from any established standpoint on politics, religion, philosophical, or societal beliefs.
While we will cover topics such as politics, sex ed, and history, we firmly believe it is the responsibility of the families to instil beliefs around or deeper understandings of those topics. We show respect for all individuals and we teach respectful discourse about any viewpoints or beliefs. Mentorship style tutoring with an emphasis on community and team effort are at the root of all our endeavours.
